Who is to Blame for the Desecration of Kano's Heritage

Back in 2010, I visited India, purely for tourism purposes, perhaps due to the marketing content I consumed ever since I was old enough to watch TV through Bollywood films. After arriving in Delhi, I immediately drove to Agra to see one of the 7 wonders of the world, which was truly magnificent. However, something happened that still stuck with me for almost a decade, it did not occur in Agra where Taj Mahal is, but rather in Delhi, when I went to check out Qutub Minar, a minaret built in 1192 when Muslims were ruling the country. While admiring the Quranic inscriptions on the minaret in a predominantly Hindu nation and the fact that it is still preserved, a little Indian girl about 8 years old approached me along with her father, who appeared to be encouraging her to talk to me. She was holding a notebook and a pencil and was a bit shy. I smiled at her, and she immediately became confident to come and talk to me. She asked me my name, and where I came from, I told her I am from Kano in Nigeria. She said she was doing a project from her school, and they were asked to go to tourist sites in Delhi and interview tourists to find out what made them visit India, and what they find unique about the places they were visiting. We had a chat and then she asked me this question “what monument do you have at home that you feel I should visit when I grow up?”. I was quite, because I don’t really have an answer then, and I said “none”. She said thank you and left. The fact that I didn’t know exciting things about my home Kano to share with this little girl hit me hard.

So, when I came back. I started becoming involved in trying to understand the culture and heritage of my home Kano. Now fast forward to 2018, I went to Brisbane Australia for an MIT Bootcamp. I met amazing people, from over 140 countries, and through networking activities almost everyone I met asked me the same questions: where are you from, what’s interesting about Kano? This time, however, I had a lot to say, I talked about the Great Wall of Kano (Badala), a 24 km fortification about a 1000 years old for which Frederick Lugard, the British General-Governor of Nigeria once remarked that he had “never seen anything like it in Africa”. I showed them pictures of the Great Durbar of Kano, which is the biggest and most colourful annual procession of horses in the world. I also talked about other exciting things like the Dala hill, the markets and occasionally threw in Baturiya of Hadejia, a beautiful place where birds travel to from Europe, annually to escape harsh weather. This time the response was quite surprising as everyone I talked to wanted to visit Kano, except for security reasons only.

So after I came back, we founded Makuba Center for Arts and Culture, where we wanted to revive the heritage of the people of Kano and tell the world why Kano is a great place to visit. We tried to use the defunct building of the British Council to commence activities, and I personally met the Emir asking for a lease of the place which was going into ruins to convert into a place for promotion of the traditional arts and culture, he turned me down. We then approached the government for a lease of the Be Minister House on Sokoto Road, which was built in 1907 and now in ruins to convert into a centre for the promotion of traditional arts and culture. In a typical civil servant style, they saw us as a threat to the money they were making leasing the place for wedding events and turned us down. While we were still working on setting up a centre irrespective of lack of interest from our leaders, the announcement to split Kano into 5 emirates popped up on my Facebook feed on Monday the 6th. Something that seemed like a joke at first became a reality when the bill got passed into law on Wednesday the 8th. Just like that our dreams seem shattered by our leaders that are more interested in the struggles for power and control of resources, than the preservation of our history, heritage, culture, and traditions. Suddenly Kano is no longer Kano but now Kano, Bichi, Karaye, Gaya, and Rano.

While the statement about our leaders only interested in power sounds a bit like a cliché for politicians anywhere around the world, what concerns me is how we as individual citizens, don’t value our culture, history, and heritage. We have now reached a stage where our leaders that are supposed to guard our heritage with all they’ve got are the ones now desecrating it, simply because they can get away with it.

The division of the Kano Emirate is perhaps the highest level of desecration of the heritage of the people of Kano. The worst that has ever happened since the return of democracy in 1999. Today, right in front of our very eyes, a politician has reduced Kano, which was an empire over 1000 years old to less than almost all its contemporaries. All foolishly in the name of political vendetta without any interest in the far-reaching consequences. As for the consequences, now, next time they call for representation from the Kano traditional institution, there will be 5 voices instead of 1. Now, 5 different Emirs would conduct appointments of ward heads, Imams and the likes, creating chaos. Now, the Kano Durbar will perhaps not be visited from all over the world, as it will have just a handful of district heads and a short, less colourful procession. History has consistently shown us that division or secession hardly work. Imagine if Saudi Arabia were to go back to their smaller territories, or UAE into smaller emirates, or the United Kingdom into smaller nations, or even Nigeria into smaller confederates. Also, according to the law of the jungle, the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack”.

Sadly, however, the response to the whole crisis that I have monitored on social media is mostly based on sentiments. Those against the move felt the Emir was wronged and hence they seek to support him, not the institution. They forget the fact that he had a role in bringing down the institution to this level by continually engaging in politics, he went against several established norms of the emirate such as for example having his daughter represent him at an event, which was completely unprecedented. Someone told me that he was also involved in the allocation of land in the Eid ground for the construction of shops (not verified), not to talk of several construction adjustments he made to the Palace (Fada) which were never attempted by his predecessors. It is one thing to be a modern Emir and bring useful innovations to a traditional system, but should that be at the expense of the destruction of a well-established tradition and culture over 1000 years old. The British who occupy some of the peaks of civilization today still practice basic traditions such as for example, naming a baby. As far as I am concerned and also as a descendant of the Dabo dynasty, the Emir paved the way for the Governor even to have the guts to undertake this unfortunate action. On the other hand, you have people that are happy with the decision and believe that these places were emirates before, and therefore should have Emirs. For them, I have nothing to say, but they should learn to see beyond their noses.

As for the Governor, the only thing that comes to mind is the story of Aerys II Targaryen in the fictional story of Game of Thrones, who after discovering his unpopularity and impending fall from the throne decided to have the entire city burnt along with all its inhabitants. So simply because the people of Kano showed they no longer want you as their Governor, you now seek to destroy it. Well, that really depends on the legacy you wish to leave behind for your descendants that will bear your name.

Whatever I say here represents my personal opinion and not the opinion of the organizations and institutions I represent or work with.

The sport is governed by the Worldwide Powerlifting Federation, which lays out the rules and requirements for

competitors. If you resolve to compete in powerlifting,

you can do so within the uncooked or equipped division, though I extremely advocate beginning

in the uncooked division. With only one rest day making it a true 6

day exercise routine, it is just beneficial for

high-level intermediates or superior lifters. In the hypertrophy training

session, relaxation for no extra than ninety seconds between sets.

Make certain you monitor progress by still striving to improve by at

least one rep each week. Powerbuilding is a sort of coaching that blends

both powerlifting and bodybuilding rules. Training begins with one of many big

three powerlifting movements (the squat, bench press, or deadlift), adopted by high-rep coaching that's dominant

in bodybuilding.

By subtracting the number of reps in reserve you could have on the

end of a set (i.e. how many extra reps you think you could have achieved in that set) you probably can calculate RPE.

For example, an RPE of 6 is roughly equivalent to having four reps in reserve, an RPE of seven correlates to having

three reps in reserve, and so forth. Squats will begin within the preparation and accumulation stages to arrange the body to lift heavier and acquire extra strength.

It will finish within the peaking stage to retain power while eliminating any fatigue.

Using 1RM share could be somewhat more beneficial for powerlifters compared to using the

RPE scale, as the former offers a extra objective conclusion. Sooner or later, however, you are

going to have to simply accept that you’re no longer a beginner, and you'll have to adjust your training appropriately.

A simple double overhand grip will suffice at first, but later on,

you would possibly want to change to one of the stronger grip methods for deadlifting.

In essence, Jeff Nippard's powerbuilding routine, with its emphasis on the "5 missed muscles" and the inclusion of a "roaming hypertrophy day," provides a well-rounded strategy to coaching.

Addressing these "missed muscle tissue" ensures a balanced

physique, contributing each to the aesthetic facet of bodybuilding and the useful strength required for powerlifting.

Nippard's routine incorporates specific workout

routines focusing on these areas, typically by way of accent work following the first strength-focused coaching.

If you’re like me, you’re sometimes on the fence

of whether you need to concentrate on training

for power or building muscle dimension.

Not to mention, coaching practically daily of the week may not be best or even essential for novices and intermediate

trainees. And when you have a particularly

busy schedule, it’s not even value considering. Remember

that you simply only have so many combos with bands and

weight plates so the % will not be actual; you just need an approximate.

You may even discover that 70lbs is greater than 40% of your lifts; if so,

go ahead and use it anyway and regulate the weights as necessary.

As usual, spend slightly bit of time to find a appropriate band or mixture of bands but don’t stress all day over getting it exact, significantly for

these using this as a newbie powerlifting program.

When it comes to strength building, there are two highly essential components that

have to be considered – training depth and

total volume. For optimum changes to happen in power, the body have to be uncovered to a coaching stimulus which

is powerful enough to cause adaptation (6). A cluster

set, on the other hand, includes using a heavy load and breaking

down the variety of reps into different phases.

A bench press pyramid is a method of bench press training whereby volume starts high with low depth and ends low with high intensity.

This pyramid formed change in volume and intensity can occur

inside a single training session or across multiple coaching periods.

Presently, the program is obtainable through an app known as "Boostcamp." The

downside to this program is that it’s the identical precise program for 12 weeks,

in addition to the rise in depth for each workout. One Other function worth noting is

that the workout blends RPE and percentages. Percentages are easy,

but RPE may be very subjective and based on your effort.

Nevertheless, amongst these options, it's essential to acknowledge the worth of individualized and

customized programming.Nothing can surpass the efforts

of an individually customized program. With this system,

there are no prescribed warm-ups or warm-up units. In order

to reduce back the chance of harm and facilitate larger

efficiency in the fitness center, a gradual, progressive warm-up should be performed (3).

Part your packages to focus totally on one quality at a time

as a substitute of a hodgepodge of stuff mashed together.

Getting stronger also lowers resting blood pressure and

blood ldl cholesterol levels, decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

There are many examples of very robust, very muscular individuals who use very totally different coaching splits.

[11,12] It doesn’t appear that one kind of coaching break

up rises above the rest. One of crucial features of weightlifting sneakers is the elevated

heel. True weightlifting sneakers generally have effective heel heights of 15mm-22mm.

Training sneakers are normally in the 6mm-8mm range, and minimalist

footwear may have as little as zero drop. Proper weightlifting shoes

embody elevated heels that permit you to keep better lifting positions.

Most notably, you’ll expertise increased forward

knee translation, a extra open hip angle, and a extra upright chest (1)(2).

This is a extra environment friendly place for squats

and traditional weightlifting actions and may additionally be safer

by discouraging lumbar hyperextension (3). What you’ll get out of a weightlifting shoe is one thing designed for

and geared in path of weightlifting.

The three most obvious benefits of weightlifting sneakers are easy to

quantify. First, their strong (often wooden) heel ensures the upward

force you apply is transferred successfully to the weight the place it belongs.

Second, this heel forces the shoulders out over the entrance aircraft of your physique creating a correct dynamic relationship between body and weight.

And third a snug, metatarsal strap prevents your foot from sliding laterally

and negatively affecting balance and stability.

All these options reduce your probability of injury and enhance your probability of achieving your private targets.

The materials that makes up these powerlifting shoes modifications all through

its construction. Love the look of old

school lifting footwear but need the improvements

in comfort of newer renditions? The advantages of conventional weightlifting footwear handle a few of these

considerations. At 20 millimeters, they've a reasonably important heel-to-toe drop, which

helps stabilize the ankle and minimize flexion. Mixed with the rigid midsole, this heel-to-toe drop also permits for extra

energy when pushing off the bottom.

While there are slight exceptions to those guidelines primarily based on your needs, the overall advantage of wearing weightlifting sneakers

is to provide enough grip and stability for lifting

heavy fitness center gear. Plus, there are even options available in the market that work well for cross training.

"These not only provide support and protection with weightlifting, but they're additionally designed for more maneuvers, like a leaping, lunging, or side-to-side movement," says Mendeszoon. You need to give yourself the

most effective chance at success when you’re on the health club, and a solid pair of weightlifting sneakers

can just do that. Whereas many people simply put on common sneakers or athletic exhibits, weightlifting shoes are specifically designed for athletes which would

possibly be shifting weight. These footwear are typically hard and flat soled shoes with an elevated heel and straps to allow for adjustability as you search your required match.

Whether Or Not you’re using the shoes to raise weights or battle by way of some high-intensity interval coaching, you’ll

want to feel steady in your ft.

The finest sneakers for lifting provide you with ample help and stability when doing workout routines like squats and presses.

Mesh, rubber, vinyl, and synthetic rubber are among the

many most typical supplies used to make in style powerlifting shoes.

With injury prevention and optimal consolation, lifting sneakers are a

worthwhile investment for anyone critical about weightlifting.

Squat sneakers enhance mobility because of the raised heel,

so you'll find a way to enjoy a greater vary of

movement for weightlifting.
